22 May – 15 June 2019
PALFREY is glad to present Basement, a solo exhibition by Martina Schmuecker. This forms part of her ongoing project The House, a series of site-specific works each using elements of a given architectural site to expand imaginations of domestic space.
For the duration of the exhibition the space is turned into a sculptural construction site, which will continuously change. The work explores the relationship between a possible inhabitant and a temporary living space. It reveals the constant re-negotiation of space, material, labour and fantasy involved in improvising a space of one’s own, using the materials and space at hand. Produced in a state of constant flux, Basement never commits to a finished form, instead promising the possibility of transformation and reinvention for different and as yet unimagined uses in the future.
Opening Wednesday 22 May 2019, 6 – 8 pm
